NotebookLM Review 2026: Gemini Notebook Pricing & Features
NotebookLM review covering the Gemini Notebook rename, free and Google AI plans, source limits, Deep Research, Audio and Video Overviews, privacy and G2.

Current Google sources verify source-grounded chat with citations, Deep Research, Audio and Video Overviews, reports, flashcards, quizzes, mind maps, slide decks, infographics, mobile apps and Gemini app sync.
The product is designed around uploaded or connected source material and current G2 reviewers strongly praise grounded synthesis, study materials and Audio Overviews, though the review base is still small.
Standard is free and Google AI Plus and Pro monthly prices are public; current Ultra usage limits are published but a stable numerical Ultra price was not reliably exposed in the retrieved public pricing result, so SearchSagar leaves it unverified.
Google states that Workspace Gemini Notebook uploads, queries and responses are not reviewed by humans or used to train models, with Workspace admin and privacy controls inherited from Google Workspace.
Scored by Surabhi Singh
NotebookLM is now officially called Gemini Notebook. Google renamed the product on July 16, 2026 while keeping it as the same standalone research and learning workspace. SearchSagar preserves the existing NotebookLM product slug and Product ID for continuity, but this review reflects the current Gemini Notebook product, pricing, features and limits.
Gemini Notebook is different from a general chatbot because it begins with a controlled source collection. Users add documents, websites, videos, audio, notes and other supported materials, then ask questions that are grounded in those sources and linked back with citations. The same source set can also power Audio Overviews, Video Overviews, reports, flashcards, quizzes, mind maps, slide decks, infographics and Deep Research.

What is NotebookLM now?
NotebookLM is the former name of Gemini Notebook, Google's source-grounded research and thinking product. Google changed the brand in July 2026 as it connected notebooks more closely with the Gemini app, Google Search and newer cloud-computer capabilities.
The basic product idea has not changed. Users create a notebook, add trusted sources and then work from that corpus. Gemini Notebook can answer questions, compare documents, identify themes, synthesize research and create derived learning or briefing artifacts.
Who is Gemini Notebook best for?
Who should use this
- Gemini Notebook is best for students, researchers, analysts, writers, educators and knowledge workers who regularly work from a defined collection of PDFs, documents, websites, videos, audio or notes and want citations back to the source material.
Who should avoid this
- Gemini Notebook is less suitable when the main need is unrestricted general web chat, fully polished document authoring or a workflow that depends primarily on external apps rather than a source collection. Users should also avoid treating source grounding as a guarantee of perfect interpretation.
Gemini Notebook features reviewed
Source-grounded chat
Gemini Notebook's core workflow is cited chat over user-selected sources. Responses are designed to stay anchored to the notebook material, and citations let users jump back to the supporting passages.
This makes verification much easier than with an assistant that answers from a large hidden model context. It is especially useful for academic papers, reports, contracts, research notes and large internal documentation sets.
Supported source types
Google currently supports source types including Google Docs, Google Slides, PDFs, text and Markdown files, pasted text, websites, public YouTube URLs and audio files. Workspace guidance says an individual source can contain up to about 500,000 words or 200 MB for uploaded files.
Source limits depend on plan. Standard supports 50 sources per notebook, Plus 100, Pro 300 and higher Ultra configurations substantially more.
Deep Research
Deep Research extends the product beyond a static uploaded corpus. It can investigate a broader question, collect information and bring synthesized findings into the notebook so users can continue working with the results alongside their existing material.
Google's published feature ceilings vary substantially by plan, with Standard receiving a much smaller allowance than Pro and Ultra. Since September 2026, overall usage is also subject to compute-based limits that consider prompt complexity, source count and feature choice.
Secure cloud computer and code execution
Google's 2026 upgrade gives Gemini Notebook a secure cloud computer that can write and execute code for supported research tasks. This enables deeper analysis, data transformation and richer outputs such as charts, spreadsheets and structured analytical artifacts.
The rollout began with higher-tier users and selected Workspace customers and expanded toward Pro access. Availability can still differ by account and rollout stage.
Audio Overviews
Audio Overviews turn notebook sources into conversational spoken explanations. They are especially useful for review during commuting, revision or preparation for a meeting.
Standard currently publishes a lower daily artifact ceiling than paid plans, while Plus, Pro and Ultra increase Audio Overview capacity. The compute-based usage system can also affect how many expensive generations a user can run within a refresh window.
Video Overviews
Gemini Notebook can generate visual explanations from sources. Current features include Video Overviews and newer Short Video Overviews that can turn complex concepts into roughly one-minute educational videos in many languages.
Higher tiers receive larger video allowances, and Pro and Ultra include access to Cinematic Video Overviews at plan-specific limits.
Reports and interactive learning overviews
The Studio area can generate reports and study-oriented summaries from notebook material. Google's September 2026 update adds interactive learning overviews that combine summaries with artifacts such as infographics, quizzes and flashcards.
This makes Gemini Notebook useful not only for reading sources but for turning them into a repeatable learning workflow.
Flashcards and quizzes
Gemini Notebook can generate flashcards and quizzes from source material. Google is expanding quiz formats to include short answer, multiple-select and fill-in-the-blank questions, while users can edit generated items and ask follow-up questions about performance.
For high-stakes study, generated questions and answers should still be reviewed against the source material.
Mind Maps
Mind Maps organize concepts and relationships visually. They are useful for seeing the structure of a large source collection, identifying major themes and finding connections between ideas.
The quality of the map depends on the clarity and coverage of the underlying sources.
Slide decks and infographics
Gemini Notebook can produce slide-oriented and infographic-style outputs from notebook material. These artifacts are helpful for briefings, revision and internal presentations, but externally published material should be reviewed for accuracy, emphasis and visual quality.
Gemini app integration
Notebooks can now appear inside the Gemini app. In Gemini Notebook itself, chat is grounded exclusively in notebook sources. In the Gemini app, notebook context can be combined with broader tools such as web search.
Studio artifacts such as Audio Overviews, Video Overviews, infographics and slide decks remain specific to the Gemini Notebook experience.
Mobile apps
Gemini Notebook is available on iOS and Android as well as the web. Google continues to add mobile-first study features including real-time notebook conversations and an audio recorder for capturing lectures or spoken notes.
Usage tracking
Starting September 2, 2026, Google introduced flexible compute-based usage limits. The system considers prompt complexity, chat length, source count, model use and the type of artifact being generated. Limits refresh every five hours until a weekly ceiling is reached.
When a user is close to the limit, the interface shows remaining usage and can offer lower-cost alternatives. Web users can also queue some generations for later.

What do users say about NotebookLM?
G2 currently shows Google NotebookLM at 4.6 out of 5 from 19 reviews. Reviewers praise source-grounded summaries, research across multiple documents, visual study outputs and the ability to turn source material into quizzes, videos and other learning assets.
Reported limitations include file-management friction, missing chat-history behavior, language or subtitle limitations and dissatisfaction from some users after the Gemini Notebook transition. With only 19 reviews, the score is directional rather than broad market validation.
Privacy and data use
Google states that content inside Gemini Notebook is not used directly to train its foundational AI models unless the user chooses to provide feedback. If feedback is submitted from a personal account, associated interaction context can be reviewed and used to improve the product under Google's privacy rules.
For qualifying Google Workspace and Workspace for Education accounts, uploaded files, queries and model responses are not reviewed by human reviewers and are not used to train AI models, including when feedback is provided.
Cancellation and refunds
There is no standalone paid NotebookLM subscription to cancel. Standard is free, while higher Gemini Notebook limits come through Google AI, Google Workspace or Google Cloud plans. Cancellation and refund eligibility therefore follow the subscription through which the higher limits were purchased.
Google One states that plans can be canceled at any time, but refund and cooling-off rights vary by country, payment channel and subscription terms.
Testing methodology
NotebookLM alternatives to consider
Relevant approved SearchSagar alternatives include Perplexity, ChatGPT and Claude. Perplexity is better suited to open-web research with citations. ChatGPT offers a broader general-purpose work environment with files, deep research and connected tools. Claude is strong for long-form document analysis, writing, projects and research.

Final verdict: is NotebookLM worth it?
Gemini Notebook is easy to recommend for anyone whose work starts with a body of source material. The free tier is strong enough to demonstrate the core value, and paid Google AI plans mainly increase capacity rather than changing the basic source-grounded workflow.
The biggest reason to choose it over a general chatbot is verification. Citations, source-constrained answers and reusable research artifacts make it easier to trace how a conclusion was reached. The biggest reason not to choose it is equally clear: if your work depends more on live web discovery, coding, broad app integrations or open-ended assistance, a general research assistant may be a better fit.
