Scored by Surabhi Singh

Grammarly remains one of the most practical AI writing tools because it follows the user instead of forcing every writing task into a separate chatbot. In our 2026 review, that cross-application layer is still the product's biggest advantage: grammar, clarity, tone and rewrite assistance can appear inside email, documents, CRM, collaboration tools and web forms while the user is already working.

The company context has changed. Grammarly is now part of Superhuman, a broader AI productivity suite that includes Superhuman Go, Coda and Mail. The writing product itself remains recognizable, but the roadmap is expanding from sentence-level assistance toward cross-app agents and proactive work. That makes Grammarly more capable, while also making the packaging slightly more complex than the old Free-versus-Premium era.

We did not conduct a verified hands-on SearchSagar test for this article. Our rating is research-based and uses current Grammarly pricing, support, security and product documentation together with G2 customer-review evidence. We therefore describe how the product works and what users report without pretending we personally tested every suggestion surface.

Quick verdict

Grammarly is still one of the best fits for people who want writing assistance everywhere they type, not only inside an AI chat. Free handles basic correctness; Pro adds advanced rewriting, tone, brand tools, plagiarism/AI detection and 2,000 monthly AI prompts. The main limitation is that suggestions can still misread context, so editorial judgment remains necessary.

Key takeaways

  • Current Pro pricing is $30 monthly, $60 quarterly or $144 annually ($12/month equivalent)
  • Free currently includes 100 AI prompts/month and Pro 2,000; Enterprise offers unlimited generative AI prompts
  • Grammarly is now part of Superhuman but remains the dedicated cross-app writing product, working across 1M+ apps/sites

What is Grammarly?

Grammarly is an AI-powered communication assistant that improves spelling, grammar, punctuation, clarity, concision, tone and style. It also supports full-sentence rewrites, generative AI, plagiarism checking, AI detection, translation and team brand controls.

Unlike a general AI assistant, Grammarly's product design is primarily inline. The tool appears in supported text fields through browser extensions, desktop applications and mobile experiences. That means a sales rep can receive writing feedback inside Salesforce, a marketer can edit in Google Docs and a manager can refine an email in Outlook without repeatedly copying text into a separate tool.

Grammarly says its communication layer works across more than one million apps and websites. Exact feature behavior varies by operating system, browser and application.

Who should use Grammarly?

Grammarly is a strong fit for professionals who write throughout the day: marketers, salespeople, customer-success teams, managers, recruiters, students, support agents and knowledge workers.

It becomes more valuable when writing is distributed across many tools. If most work happens inside Gmail, Word, Google Docs, Slack, Salesforce, Jira and similar applications, inline suggestions reduce context switching.

It is less differentiated for users who mainly need long-form ideation, research or autonomous content generation. ChatGPT, Jasper and other AI platforms can generate more extensive first drafts and workflows. Grammarly's strength is improving communication while the user writes.

Correctness remains Grammarly's foundation. It catches spelling, punctuation, grammar and sentence-level issues while the user types.

This is also where the product has its strongest customer validation. G2's large review base consistently praises basic correction quality and the convenience of receiving feedback in real time.

The limitation is that language is contextual. A suggestion can be grammatically valid and still change meaning, technical terminology or a deliberate stylistic choice. We would not recommend accepting every edit automatically.

Clarity and full-sentence rewrites

Grammarly Pro can rewrite full sentences to improve clarity, fluency and impact. This is useful when the original sentence is technically correct but awkward, wordy or difficult to scan.

For workplace writing, these edits often save more time than basic spell-check because they address structure rather than isolated errors.

Writers should compare the rewrite with the original before accepting it. Marketing, legal, product and technical writing can lose nuance when an AI system optimizes for generic clarity.

Tone detection and tone adjustment

Free users can see writing tone, while Pro expands tone adjustment. Grammarly analyzes language patterns and can suggest ways to sound more confident, direct, friendly, formal or aligned with a chosen intent.

This is useful in email and customer-facing communication where the same factual message can feel very different depending on phrasing.

Tone remains subjective. An AI model does not know every interpersonal or cultural context, so tone recommendations are guidance rather than social truth.

Generative AI

Current Grammarly support documentation lists 100 monthly generative AI prompts on Free and 2,000 on Pro. Pro can use AI to draft, brainstorm, rewrite, summarize and transform text.

The prompt allowance refreshes monthly based on when generative AI became available on the account.

Grammarly's generative AI is most useful when it stays connected to writing already in progress. General-purpose assistants can be stronger for open-ended reasoning, but Grammarly reduces the friction between generation and editing.

Grammarly Pro team features

Pro is no longer only an individual plan. Web-purchased Grammarly Pro supports from one user up to 149 seats.

Teams can use style guides, brand tones, knowledge share, snippets and usage analytics. These features help standardize recurring terminology and communication rather than only correcting individual grammar.

Additional seats follow the same monthly, quarterly or annual rate and are prorated for the remaining subscription period.

Style guides and brand tones

Style guides allow teams to define preferred terminology and writing rules. Brand tones allow administrators and designated roles to define on-brand and off-brand tone profiles.

This is valuable for distributed marketing, sales and support teams because guidance appears while employees write rather than living in a PDF that nobody checks.

The quality of results depends on configuration. A stale style guide can create stale recommendations at scale.

Knowledge share and snippets

Knowledge share helps users understand internal jargon and acronyms without leaving the writing surface. Snippets support reusable message templates for repetitive communication.

These features move Grammarly from personal editing toward organizational communication infrastructure.

They are especially useful for onboarding and support teams, where consistent terminology and repeatable answers matter.

Plagiarism checker

Grammarly's plagiarism checker scans writing against online and published sources and helps users identify similarity before submission. It can also support citation workflows.

Current support materials make the plagiarism checker available through paid experiences including Pro and Plus in docs and Superhuman Go.

A similarity match is not a legal or academic conclusion by itself. Human review is required to determine whether quoted, referenced or common language is actually problematic.

AI detector

Grammarly's AI detector estimates whether text appears to have been generated or modified by major AI systems.

Grammarly itself warns that AI detection can produce errors and that the percentage should not be treated as objective proof of authorship.

We consider this an important limitation. Schools, employers and editors should not use one detector score as definitive evidence that a person did or did not write a document.

Multilingual writing

Grammarly now provides real-time writing support across more than 20 languages, including translation and paragraph-level rewrite capabilities in supported experiences.

This broadens the product beyond its historical English-first identity and makes it more useful for international teams.

Feature parity can vary by language, so organizations should test the exact languages used by employees before making a company-wide assumption.

Superhuman Go

Grammarly is now part of Superhuman, and users can optionally move toward the Superhuman Go experience. Go extends assistance beyond writing into cross-app prompts and agents.

Existing Grammarly functionality remains largely intact. Current support documentation says saved documents, settings and subscriptions remain available as the suite evolves.

This broader product direction is useful for people who want one assistant across work apps, but buyers should distinguish standalone Grammarly Pro features from bundled Superhuman products when comparing plans.

Apps and integrations

Grammarly supports Windows, macOS, major browser extensions, iPhone, iPad and Android. Its supported work surfaces include Google Docs, Microsoft Word, Outlook, Gmail, Slack, Salesforce, Jira, Confluence and many other sites.

Coverage is broad but not universal. Some website frameworks, iframe-based fields or unusual editors may not support the browser extension fully.

Grammarly's own support center documents occasional website-specific compatibility problems and widget overlap issues.

Security and privacy

Grammarly publishes a mature security program. Current materials list SOC 2 Type II and SOC 3, ISO/IEC 27001, 27017, 27018, 27701 and ISO 42001.

Grammarly encrypts data in transit and at rest and supports enterprise controls such as multi-factor authentication, custom security settings and SAML SSO on relevant organizational plans.

Enterprise also includes confidential mode, which can disable Grammarly automatically on Gmail messages or Word documents marked confidential under supported configurations.

Model training and product improvement

Grammarly's Trust Center says users can opt out of allowing their content to be used for product improvement and model training by turning off Product Improvement and Training in account settings.

Tailored assistance can also be disabled. When supported personalization features are turned off, Grammarly says stored data used for that feature is deleted.

Organizations should configure these settings according to internal data policy rather than relying on default consumer behavior.

Free plan

Free includes core correctness assistance, tone visibility and 100 monthly AI prompts.

For users who mainly want grammar and spelling support, Free can provide substantial value without payment.

The main reason to upgrade is not basic correctness; it is advanced rewriting, tone control, plagiarism/AI checking, brand features and much higher AI allowance.

Grammarly Pro

Pro costs $30 monthly, $60 every three months or $144 annually. Annual billing has the lowest effective rate at $12 per member per month.

Pro includes everything in Free plus full-sentence rewrites, tone adjustment, brand tools and 2,000 monthly generative AI prompts.

Because Pro can support up to 149 seats, many small and midsize teams no longer need a separate legacy Grammarly Business purchase.

Enterprise

Enterprise is custom-priced and is now positioned through the broader Superhuman family.

Current Grammarly Pro materials list unlimited members, dedicated support, confidential mode, granular roles and permissions, data loss prevention and unlimited generative AI prompts.

Enterprise is relevant when governance and sensitive-data controls matter more than the per-seat self-serve economics of Pro.

What G2 users say

G2 currently rates Grammarly 4.7/5 from 14,073 reviews. That is one of the largest review bases among AI writing tools.

Positive themes center on real-time corrections, ease of use, grammar quality and the convenience of getting help while writing.

Negative themes include incorrect or irrelevant suggestions and interface issues where Grammarly can obstruct text fields or behave inconsistently on specific sites.

Grammarly Docs and agent-assisted writing

Grammarly's writing surface has become more agent-oriented under the Superhuman product direction. In docs and supported Go experiences, users can access task-specific tools such as AI Detector and Plagiarism Checker alongside normal editing assistance.

This is useful because originality checks, rewriting and drafting can happen in the same environment, but users should keep the roles separate. A plagiarism match is evidence of text overlap; an AI-detector percentage is only a probabilistic signal; a rewrite is an editorial suggestion. Treating all three as definitive automated judgments would overstate what the tools can prove.

Where Grammarly can slow users down

Inline assistance is useful precisely because it is always present, but that persistence can become distracting. Grammarly's own support documentation acknowledges unsupported fields, website-specific issues and cases where the widget overlaps text or interface controls.

For focused drafting, users may prefer to disable suggestions temporarily and review the document at the end. Technical writers may also want custom style rules so intentional terminology is not repeatedly treated as an error.

Measuring Grammarly's value at work

The best ROI metric is not the number of suggestions accepted. We would measure time saved on revisions, fewer writing-related review cycles, reduced brand corrections and faster responses in email or support workflows.

For a team deployment, administrators can also monitor whether style-guide and brand-tone suggestions reduce repeated editorial comments. If adoption is high but writing-review time does not decline, the organization may be paying for suggestions without changing the underlying workflow.

4.8/5

Usability and implementation

4.9/5

Pricing and value transparency

4.6/5

4.9/5

The 4.8 SearchSagar score reflects Grammarly's unusually strong cross-app usability, mature writing features and security posture. Pricing is transparent, but the monthly-to-annual gap is large and Enterprise remains custom.

Grammarly versus major alternatives

ChatGPT is stronger for broad reasoning, research, coding and open-ended generation, but less persistent as an inline writing layer. Jasper is stronger for marketing teams that need brand-controlled campaign generation and agents. Writesonic has shifted heavily toward AI-search visibility, GEO and SEO content workflows.

Grammarly remains strongest when the main requirement is improving writing everywhere employees already type.

Who should use this

  • Professionals who write throughout the workday
  • Teams using Gmail, Docs, Word, Slack, CRM and collaboration tools
  • Organizations that need brand tone/style guidance inline
  • Multilingual teams needing writing support across 20+ languages
  • Users who want proofreading plus controlled generative AI in one writing layer

Who should avoid this

  • Users who primarily need deep research or autonomous content generation
  • Writers who prefer fully manual editorial control without inline suggestions
  • Buyers unwilling to commit annually but sensitive to the $30 monthly rate
  • Organizations expecting AI detection to prove authorship
  • Teams using unsupported or highly specialized text editors

Expert tip

Use Grammarly as an editing layer, not an automatic approval system. For one week, track which suggestion categories you accept most—correctness, clarity, tone, rewrites or generative AI. If advanced categories rarely save time, Free may be enough; if rewrite and brand tools are used daily, annual Pro has much better economics than monthly billing.

— SearchSagar editorial team

Final verdict

Grammarly's biggest advantage remains deceptively simple: it helps where writing happens. That cross-app behavior makes it more useful for everyday communication than a tool users must remember to open separately.

Pro is a strong upgrade for writing-heavy professionals and teams, especially at the annual rate. Users should still review suggestions critically and treat plagiarism/AI-detection results as signals rather than final judgments.
