Top 10 tips for healthy aging with wellness, diet, and exercise

People in today’s society are getting older. If you get old and are healthy simultaneously, this is probably the greatest gift. Many people, however, are no longer fit and vital in old age, instead they are plagued by various diseases that bring various symptoms with them. In this context, it is important even as a young person to take care of yourself, eat healthily and have enough exercise in everyday life. In this article, we want to introduce the most important tips on how to grow old healthily. This means that a large number of diseases can be avoided or alleviated.

Nutrition rich in vital substances

Even if many people between the ages of 20 and 60 are doing well, diet is also very important during this time. Anyone who eats poorly in this phase destroys their intestines, which have important functions for maintaining health and vitality. That is why it is good and important to eat in such a way that the body stays healthy.

Due to today’s fast food offerings and the numerous ready meals, most people find it difficult to choose the right one.

However, if you want to do something good for yourself, then it is good to choose these foods:

  • fruit and vegetables
  • legumes
  • Nuts and seeds
  • whole grain products
  • Wild herbs
  • Little animal products

“If you don’t move, you rust” – there is a lot of truth in this proverb. In this day and age life is becoming more and more comfortable and in many ways, it is wonderful too. The latest technologies in particular make everyday life a lot easier for many people. However, if you want to avoid sitting in a wheelchair, it is good to eat healthily and to incorporate sufficient exercise. Thanks to modern technology, the easy-to-use wheelchairs, and the option of being able to mount a ramp for the wheelchair in front of your own house entrance, the problem of being no longer as mobile is no longer as bad as it was a few decades ago. Still, nobody wants to spend their retirement years in a wheelchair.

Anyone who regularly does exercises and sports units at a young age will have significantly fewer problems in the years to come. This has to do with the fact that the body is always used to capacity up to a certain point. In this way, the entire body remains fit. Nobody has to go to the gym for this if they don’t feel like it. Normally it is completely sufficient to go jogging, hiking, cycling, or inline skating on a regular basis. But team sports are also fun for many people.

What do experts recommend for an active and healthy old age?

1) Physical activity

Performing physical exercise daily helps the elderly to improve their mobility, balance, and coordination and, in this way, maintain their autonomy and independence for as long as possible.

2) Healthy diet

A good diet helps at any stage of life, but in old age, it is essential. Healthy eating in later life involves increasing the consumption of certain nutrients and reducing the consumption of others. The diet must be adapted according to the time of year and the individual needs of each person.

3) Good sleep habits:

For older adults, falling asleep tends to become much more difficult, and having a restful sleep cycle can be more difficult. Therefore, to prevent sleep disorders, it is essential to establish a routine and adopt good sleep habits, such as creating a relaxing environment, turning off the television and mobile devices, having a light dinner, going to bed, and getting up at the same time, avoiding consumption of beverages such as coffee or alcohol, among others.

  1. An active social life: many older adults feel that they are a burden on their friends and family, so they tend to distance themselves and isolate themselves: this is a mistake that can lead to depression or dysthymia. To ensure personal well-being, it is essential to help you maintain good social and family relationships.
  2. Being busy: it is necessary to take advantage of the free time that is usually had at this age, so participating in activities, workshops, studying languages, among others, can be a great alternative. The occupation helps to maintain new social relationships, enjoy free time, and exercise the mind and body.
  3. Health control: in all stages of life, it is necessary to control the state of health, but in old age, it is even more important to take special care of each of the medical processes required. Regular check-ups and follow-up treatments should not be forgotten.
  4. Sexuality: sexuality is part of a healthy lifestyle, and pleasure is ageless. Eroticism and sensuality can be prolonged, giving you pleasure and satisfaction, even if the sexual act itself lasts less time.
  5. Recreation: the mental health of the elderly is a central issue because, while the functionality of the body is vital, a good emotional state is more important. For this, it is necessary to have recreational activities that help in this purpose, such as: watching movies, reading, attending theater, concerts, ecological walks, responsibilities in neighborhood meetings, etc.
  6. Stop smoking and alcohol: the consumption of tobacco or alcohol increases the risk of suffering diseases that deteriorate physical and mental health. Clinical studies conclude that quitting smoking before age 50 reduces the risk of dying from a tobacco-related disease by 50%, while quitting smoking at age 65 only reduces that risk by 10%.
  7. Staying in contact with nature: especially when the weather is good, nature helps improve the quality of life: “having this contact encourages them to get out of the house and motivates them to be physically, spiritually and emotionally active,” says Jessica Finlay, a researcher at the University of Minnesota.
